What's New
Announcement from FHE Board Chair and E.D.
As we approach year's end, we are already reflecting back on 2007
and our challenges and accomplishments of the past year. The FHE Board
of Directors added three new members in 2007, Dr. Nancy Thoennes,
Mr. Arne van Roon and Mr. Bruce Gottlieb. Nancy Thoennes is a distinguished
social policy researcher specializing in the areas of child custody
and parental rights policy. She is a Colorado native and counts among
her passions the Colorado Rockies baseball team, who recently competed
in the Baseball World Series. Arne van Roon is originally from Holland,
and now makes his home in Switzerland. Arne has a deep background
in international business. He has also completed all three levels
of SE® training, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced. He believes
deeply in the FHE mission and wants to help SE® expand... read

First Annual SE Conference!
The Foundation for Human Enrichment (FHE) is thrilled to report that
our first International Somatic Experiencing® Conference, “Life
Energy and the Emergent Therapeutic Paradigm: A Balanced Approach
to Body, Brain and Mind,” October 24-26, 2007, at the Claremont
Resort and Spa in Berkeley, California, was a huge success! Four hundred
practitioners, researchers, thinkers and educators met to learn and
share the latest and best knowledge and wisdom in trauma healing.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a short-term, naturalistic trauma-healing
approach that enables people to access their innate ability to rebound
from overwhelming experience. SE facilitates the healing process by
helping traumatized people release stored survival energy and complete
interrupted biological patterns that have gotten stuck in the nervous
system. The celebrated founder... read more
2008 Practitioners
Registry
With the New Year fast approaching, the time has come to be listed
on the 2008 FHE Annual Practitioners Registry. This
professional registry is vital in helping the general public find
those who use Somatic Experiencing® in their practice AND is vital
in assisting professionals in providing SE® referrals to their
patients and clients.
Beginning December 31, 2007, all 2007 profiles
will be removed from the registry. Below are the steps for either
keeping or updating your current profile or to join the registry
for 2008. All profiles will be posted beginning Jan 1, 2008.

NEW SE SESSION LOGS
Download Form
The FHE now has a new, updated session log on which to record your
SE® sessions. In order to expedite processing of SE session logs
and alleviate questions as to which type of session was recorded,
the new forms allows you to just circle the level and type of session.
You can click
here to download a form or visit the Members
Section of the website. Please start using the new forms as soon
as possible.
Please forward your original session logs to the FHE upon the
completion of required hours for SEP certification and keep
a copy for your records. Remember, participants are always responsible
for tracking their own session hours.
STUDENT RESOURCES
Now that the new SE® manuals have been completed, our attention
will be turned to getting the Student Resources portion of the FHE
website up and running. This section of the FHE website will eventually
contain SE®-related articles, links to other reference material,
articles written by FHE faculty and other resources to support our
SE® students’ learning.
We are getting started on this section by posting a new SE®
Informed Consent form, which may be downloaded at no charge. There
is also information, prepared by our ethics consultant, Dr. Ofer
Zur, about Standard of Care in relation to SE®, treatment planning
and clinical recordkeeping. You may access this information by clicking
on the following link - http://www.traumahealing.com/Members/ or by going to the Members Section of the
FHE website.
SE Reseach News
FHE RESEARCH PROGRAM NEWS
Dr. Laurie Leitch, Research Director, FHE
The first SE outcome study has been published! It is in the journal
Traumatology Vol.13, No.4:11-20 and describes the work in
Thailand after the tsunami. The second study of the Hurricane Katrina/Rita
survivors is currently under review at the journal Social Work.
We had a wonderful turnout for the Research meeting at the October
SE conference in Berkeley. More than 50 very interesting people came
and contributed their enthusiasm and described their ideas for extending
the research agenda. It feels as if we are creating a strong community
of people interested in helping FHE build a much-needed evidence base.
Also, at the Research meeting Abi Blakeslee presented her dissertation
research. We hope that Abi's presentation to a group of peers is just
the first of other such presentations. And a big thanks to Abi for
blazing a new trail!
If you were not at the meeting and want to keep up with FHE-based
research, please check the website. We will be updating it soon and
we will be able to have interactive dialogue about research issues.
Also on the website will be instruments that can be used in SE outcome
studies, description of the "gold standard" for research
studies, and funding sources for trauma-oriented research. We encourage
SE students to consider doing an SE study for Masters thesis or doctoral
dissertation work. If you are interested in, or planning to do an
SE-based study, please contact Laurie. We would like to keep an up-to-date
list of SE researchers.
The following research projects are "in development":
1. A study of SE and domestic violence will be submitted to NIMH in
mid-February. We will need at least 3 sites; so if you have access
to a domestic violence program and there are SEPs in your area, please
contact Laurie Leitch (l.leitch@comcast.net).
2. The veterans focus group project is underway. If you are involved
with an organization that serves vets and might be interested in being
a pilot site for a Phase 2 study of SE effectiveness with vets, please
contact Laurie. We would like to conduct a multi-site study with some
geographic variability.
3. Development of a case-study protocol. The protocol can be used
by SE students and faculty to report on SE qualitative outcomes of
single cases. The protocol will include how to write up the results
for publication. This is a complement to the more quantitative outcome
studies we will be conducting with vets, domestic violence survivors,
etc. When the case study protocol is posted on the Research Program
part of the FHE website everyone will receive an email notification.
We hope to see lots of case studies getting published!
We are looking for a doctoral student or other research-oriented person
who would be willing to develop and standardize an SE-specific outcome
instrument. Most symptom inventories are lacking in some of the domains
we would want to explore in an SE outcome study. Please let me know
if that would be of interest to one or several of you who could work
together.
Finally, at some point in the near future we will be organizing a
Research Special Interest Group (R-SIG). This group will meet during
annual conferences and will stay in touch about emerging research
issues and interests. You will be notified when we initiate the R-SIG.
A lot is happening on the research front at FHE!
