Letter from Board President &
Peter Levine, Ph.D.
Well, as Bob Dylan said, "The times they are a changing." As the President of the Board, Acting Executive Director, SEP and a training assistant, I have had some amazing experiences lately! When traveling to Europe twice, I met with our European organizations and also had the privilege of assisting at a training in Holland; both experiences were wonderful. I am now looking forward to more dialogues with all these wonderfully skilled practitioners and to working with other organizations. My hats off to our entire distinguished faculty, both international and domestic! I was also excited to meet two wonderful Irish assistants and we look forward to our first training in Ireland in 2010. In addition, Maggie Kline will be starting a training in Japan and Maggie Phillips is doing a training in China. It is so heart-warming that the work of SE continues to spread. Thank you all so much!

SE Annual Registry
Looking for an economical and practical way to promote your practice? We are often contacted by prospective clients who have just read one of Peter Levine's books and want to find someone who is trained in SE! We are also contacted by professionals who want to refer clients to a SE trained therapist or body-worker.. So, how do we connect them to you? We refer them to the SE Annual Registry!
The time has come to be listed on the 2009 FHE Annual Practitioners Registry.
This professional registry is vital in helping the general public find those who use Somatic Experiencing in their practice AND is vital in assisting professionals in providing SE referrals to their patients and clients. But, if you're not in the Annual Registry, they can't find you!
Beginning December 31, 2008, all 2008 profiles were removed from the registry. Below are the steps for either keeping or updating your 2008 profile or to join the registry for 2009.

SE Training Costs INCREASE
As we all know, the world-wide economy has not been the healthiest of late. Unfortunately, as a result, the FHE finds we must raise tuition to keep pace with costs. As of January 1, 2009, early registration discounted tuition (more than 30 days before the class start date) was increased to $750 and standard tuition was increased to $800 for each Beginning and Intermediate training module. Early registration discounted tuition for each six-day Advanced training module was increased to $1125 and the standard tuition was increased to $1175. We understand this change may be difficult for some and want to remind you that we do have payment plans available. Also, through April 2009, the payment plan fee will be waived.
Please know that the FHE remains committed to offering the highest quality professional SE trainings at the lowest possible fees. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued support.

Beginning SE Trainings:
Why SE Training NOW?
With all the uncertainty and fear going on with the economy, professionals ask why they should invest now in the SE training? What will it do for them and their practice?
Today we have many changes and challenges facing our country and the world. The media delivers doses of fear and anxiety to the public on a daily basis; news of job layoffs and bank failures served up along with their dinners. Now more than ever, we as professionals need a highly effective tool to bring stability and resilience to our clients. SE is that tool.
With a solid understanding of how stress and overwhelm effect our nervous systems, SE teaches concrete techniques to recognize and treat the symptoms triggered by stress and trauma, both current and historical. If you're a professional seeking additional training to support your clients and patients during these difficult times, the SE training is a timely choice. And by the way, there is also the added benefit of building increased settling, presence and resiliency in your own system.

4 DVD set for Trauma Through A Child's Eyes
with Peter A. Levine, Ph.D., and Maggie Kline, M.S., M.F.T.
This highly anticipated DVD set, recorded October 2008 in Colorado, is geared for professionals who have an interest in working with children, as well as those wishing to deepen their understanding of inner child work with adults. You are able to watch as Peter and Maggie skillfully explore trauma along a developmental continuum from a somatic perspective of the child's emerging body-mind. In addition, you will discover that the effects of trauma can result from not only catastrophic events, such as abuse, violence, disasters, and the loss of loved ones, but from commonplace events such as accidents, falls, medical procedures, separations and divorce. At the core of this understanding is just how trauma is imprinted on the body, brain and spirit.
This workshop demonstrates how trauma can be both prevented and resolved through play, art and sensory-motor activities through a combination of didactic presentations.

By learning to self-regulate at the individual level, we can prevent and heal the shattering impact trauma has on our nervous system. Regaining this balance at the collective level is possible as well. Understanding the biological origins of trauma and violence can reshape our understanding of political conflicts. Our commitment to the global healing of trauma is possible when we understand the costs of trauma, create a new political dialogue and rethink our education and social programs.

Tenderloin Free Clinic for Somatic Experiencing
- Pilot Program
In affiliation with a variety of community organizations in the San Francisco Tenderloin district including the Faithful Fools and The Welcome Ministry, we are embarking on the development of a pilot program to deliver Somatic Experiencing sessions at no charge to homeless individuals including veterans who are living on the streets and in Single Room Occupancy Hotels (SROs), as well as to the staffs of these organizations that work with the homeless. Basing our efforts on the models used thus far successfully by a group of SEPs at the COTS homeless shelter in Petaluma, we hope to create a monthly, or bi-monthly, free drop-in clinic in the Tenderloin. The organizers have been meeting every other Monday morning since mid-September to set things in motion, and we are now ready to reach out our efforts to serve this deserving and very underserved population and the people who work with them. So far these folks have responded positively with interest in SE work. We are looking for experienced SEP volunteers who would be willing to commit one Monday morning per month (or two if possible), 9am to 12:30pm, to be available at Faithful Fools (234 Hyde Street) for working with drop-in clients and/or staff. Inspired by the SEPs working at COTS, we will be applying Raja's VIDYA model, the Trauma First Aid model and models presented by Steve Hoskinson. If you are interested in learning more about what we are creating, or in participating or contributing in any way, please contact: Cynthia Merchant, or 510-843-2580. We would be very happy to hear form any of you who have further ideas or suggestions regarding our efforts.
Best,
Cynthia Merchant
Grad Student Request
Can you help?
Hello, I am a graduate student at Smith College School for Social Work. I am working on my master's thesis on trauma and body-centered psychotherapy. I am seeking participants to help me understand the nature of trauma in the body and the outcome of using therapeutic touch as a method of healing. I am a Level II Usui Reiki practitioner in the Connecticut- New England area and would greatly appreciate if you could help me recruit participants for my study titled- Trauma and the Body: A Survey Examining the Use of Therapeutic Touch.
Participants must be between 25-65 years of age, have a past diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or self identify as having experienced a traumatic event, used bodywork involving direct touch as a healing modality, along with one year of psychotherapy. If you know of anyone that might fit this criteria, please direct them to my link: www.traumaandthebody.net
Please feel free to contact me at Sunshine Finneran if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you.

Dr. Leitch resigns
It is with deep gratitude that we acknowledge the work Dr. Laurie Leitch has done for the FHE. Laurie has recently resigned her position as Director of Research, but is leaving behind a wonderful legacy which includes amazing research done with Thailand tsunami survivors, as well as those from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Published articles include Somatic Experiencing Treatment with Tsunami Survivors in Thailand: Broadening the Scope of Early Intervention Traumatology 2007 and Somatic Experiencing Treatment with Social Service Workers Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Social Work Journal January 2009. We sincerely appreciate how Dr. Leitch's work has added to the standing of Somatic Experiencing in the field of trauma and we wish her the best as she continues her work as Co-Executive Director of Trauma Resource Institute (TRI).
A new Field Report has been submitted for the China Earthquake Relief Project (CHERP). Visit the FHE homepage and click on China Earthquake Relief Project to see all the reports. As noted by Laurie Leitch, Trauma Resource Institute Co-Founder and Co-Director, "The work went very well and we trained and/or offered case consultation and practice to approximately 145 physicians, nurses, and teachers. Those receiving a one day somatic orientation will receive the full training when Phase 5 team comes to China March 8-22, 2009."
